What Makes 'The Main Line' and Chester County a Great Place to Live?

Chester County (pop. 376,000) was one of the three original counties created by William Penn in 1682. The rolling Pennsylvania hills echo history and heritage as the area surrounding the birthplace of American democracy, Philadelphia. Valley Forge and the Brandywine Valley are historical treasures.

Today, Chester County is an ideal mix of the past, present and future. Outstanding museums, the Philadelphia Orchestra and Ballet, and world-class restaurants (Le Bec Fin, #1 in the U.S., is in Philadelphia) are only a few of the area's attractions. Philadelphia is home to sports team franchises in all the major leagues. It's a quick trip to the Amish country.

Many nationally recognized colleges and universities are located here. The county's excellent public and private school systems attest to the area's focus on education. The Upper Main Line YMCA has a nationally recognized program, and the Main Line Night School is a model for adult education.

Transportation has long been an area asset. The Philadelphia "Main Line" railroad also means easy access to Amtrak lines to Washington, D.C. and New York. The PA Turnpike and the "Blue Route" make the Great Valley high-tech corridor most accessible.

Perhaps what's most remarkable about Chester County, though, is the way that progress has not broken down the neighborhoods and villages of the area, some which date back to the 1700's. Stream-filled valleys, covered bridges and horse farms are integral to the fabric of the county-where art, culture, history and 21st century progress combine to make this a great place to live!
